Why Your Gut Health Matters
Your digestive system does way more than break down food.
About 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. Most of your serotonin gets produced there too. That’s the neurotransmitter that controls your mood, sleep, and appetite. The trillions of gut bacteria (your microbiome) affect your hormones, nutrient absorption, inflammation, and brain function.
When your gut bacteria get out of balance, everything else starts breaking down. This is why I focus on digestive health when treating metabolic issues, hormonal imbalances, and immune problems. You can’t separate gut function from the rest of your health.

Chronic Bloating and Gas
Uncomfortable bloating after eating. Clothes getting tight by the afternoon. Bloating that gets worse around your period.
Bloating points to something specific. Food sensitivities. Poor bile flow. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Not enough digestive enzymes. Bacterial imbalance. Inflammation.
Treatment includes elimination diets to find triggers, digestive support, antimicrobials for bacterial imbalances, probiotics, gall bladder and liver support and stress management.
Food Sensitivities and Intolerances
You react to foods that never used to bother you. Digestive upset, headaches, skin reactions, joint pain, brain fog after eating.
Food sensitivities are different from allergies. They cause delayed reactions that make them hard to pin down.
Sensitivities develop when your gut lining is damaged. Leaky gut, bacterial imbalance, inflammation, low stomach acid, or enzyme problems let undigested food particles trigger immune reactions.
Treatment uses elimination diets, food sensitivity testing when appropriate, and gut healing protocols to restore your intestinal barrier and rebalance gut bacteria.
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
IBS is a diagnosis given when we can’t find anything obviously wrong but you clearly have digestive problems. Cramping, diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between both.
The conventional approach treats symptoms with medications. I look for underlying causes.
Low-grade gut infections. SIBO. Bacterial imbalance. Food sensitivities. Stress and nervous system problems. Hormonal imbalances. Gut-brain connection issues. Liver-Gall bladder problems.
SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)
Bacteria that should stay in your large intestine migrate to your small intestine where they don’t belong. They ferment food too early, causing severe bloating, gas, pain, and irregular bowel movements.
SIBO is more common than most people realize. It’s behind a lot of bloating that won’t respond to typical treatments.
But contrary to popular belief, SIBO isn’t the root cause, it is a symptom. Contributing factors include low stomach acid, poor bile flow, sluggish liver health, slow gut movement, stress, previous food poisoning, and structural issues.
Treatment uses targeted antimicrobial protocols, dietary modifications, support to restore proper gut movement, and addresses root causes so SIBO doesn’t return.
Leaky Gut
Your intestinal lining acts as a barrier. It lets nutrients through while keeping out toxins, undigested food, and pathogens.
When this barrier gets damaged, things that shouldn’t pass through do. This triggers immune responses, inflammation, food sensitivities, and symptoms beyond digestive issues.
Causes include chronic stress, inflammatory foods, infections, medications like NSAIDs or antibiotics, alcohol, and bacterial imbalance.
Treatment removes inflammatory triggers, uses therapeutic nutrition and targeted supplements to heal your intestinal lining, restores healthy gut bacteria, and manages stress.
Constipation
Going days without a bowel movement. Straining. Hard stools. Feeling incomplete.
Common causes include low fiber and water intake, sedentary lifestyle, hormonal imbalances (especially low thyroid), magnesium deficiency, liver-gall bladder issues, chronic stress and bacterial imbalance.
Treatment addresses your specific causes through dietary changes, targeted supplements, movement recommendations, and addressing hormonal factors.
Diarrhea and Loose Stools
Frequent loose stools, urgency, cramping. Diarrhea causes dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and nutrient loss.
Causes include infections, SIBO, food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel conditions, stress-induced digestive movement problems, and bile acid issues.
Treatment identifies what’s driving your diarrhea, restores normal bowel function, heals gut inflammation, and supports proper digestion.
Acid Reflux and Heartburn
Burning in your chest or throat after eating. Regurgitation. Feeling like food is stuck. Waking up at night with reflux.
We often assume reflux is caused by too much stomach acid. In reality, it’s frequently related to low stomach acid, poor lower esophageal sphincter tone, fermentation in the stomach, or dysfunction of the enteric nervous system.
Effective treatment involves assessing your true stomach acid status, addressing a hiatal hernia if present, identifying food triggers, supporting digestion with appropriate enzymes, and healing the tissue of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These are serious autoimmune conditions causing chronic inflammation in your digestive tract.
I work alongside your gastroenterologist to support your body’s healing capacity naturally. This isn’t about replacing medical treatment.
Naturopathic support reduces inflammation, supports gut healing, identifies dietary triggers, optimizes nutritional status (IBD causes deficiencies), and manages stress that worsens flares.

My Approach to Gut Healing
Gut-Specific Testing
Depends on your case. Options include:
Comprehensive Stool Analysis: Evaluates gut bacteria balance, inflammation markers, enzyme function, and signs of infection.
SIBO Breath Testing: Measures hydrogen and methane gases to diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
Blood Work: Assesses nutritional status, thyroid function, inflammatory markers, and other factors impacting gut health.
Not everyone needs testing. Sometimes clinical assessment is enough. We discuss what makes sense for you.
Treatment Protocols
Your gut healing plan is built for you specifically.
Therapeutic Nutrition: Anti-inflammatory diet protocols and elimination strategies to identify triggers and heal your gut.
Targeted Supplementation: Probiotics, digestive enzymes, gut-healing nutrients, and antimicrobials when needed.
Lifestyle Support: Stress management, sleep optimization, and movement strategies.
Botanical Medicine: Herbal antimicrobials and anti-inflammatories when appropriate.

Gut Health FAQs
Can you cure IBS?
IBS is a diagnosis based on symptoms. When we address root causes like SIBO, bacterial imbalance, food sensitivities, or stress-related gut problems, symptoms resolve.
Will I have to follow a restrictive diet forever?
No. Therapeutic elimination diets are temporary tools to reduce inflammation and identify triggers.
As your gut heals, we systematically reintroduce foods. Most women can expand their diet significantly once their gut lining repairs and their gut bacteria rebalances.
The goal is food freedom. Not permanent restriction.
Do I need to stop my medications?
No. I never ask patients to stop prescribed medications without their doctor’s approval.
My approach is integrative. We work alongside your conventional healthcare team. For conditions like IBD, I support your medical treatment with natural therapies that complement what your gastroenterologist prescribes.
